The seasons of the Church, celebrated by Zion Lutheran Church
Advent is the first season of the church year. The first Sunday of Advent in 2017 is December 3rd. During Advent, we experience a time of waiting -- yes, for the birth of Jesus as a baby in Bethlehem, but also for the coming of Jesus at the end of the age. The color is blue.
Our waiting is rewarded by the birth of the Christ child. At Zion we celebrate Christmas Eve with a beautiful candlelight service for all ages. Christmas is also a season of the church. The color is white. Merry Christmas!

The Day of Epiphany is January 6th. The season of Epiphany follows. It is a time when we celebrate how Jesus was revealed to be our King. It is also the time of marking the journey of the three wise men to visit the infant Jesus (Three Kings Day). The color is green.
Lent is preceded by Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras), the evening before Ash Wednesday. At Zion we celebrate with a traditional supper of pancakes and sausages (and eggs for those with dietary restrictions). Lent formally begins with Ash Wednesday, with forgiveness of sins and imposition of ashes on your forehead (or hand if you desire) at our service in the evening. Lent is a six-week season. On Wednesdays, we meet for soup and a simple worship service in the fellowship hall. We share this worship with Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairview, and we alternate worship spaces with Trinity. The color for Good Friday is black, but purple for the other times in Lent.
The week before Easter. On Maundy Thursday, we hear the story of how Jesus washed the disciples’ feet at the Last Supper, and we celebrate the Lord's Supper (Communion). On Good Friday, we traditionally participate in the walk through Ridgefield to different churches, carrying the cross. At each church, the gathered share a brief worship. On Good Friday evening, we commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus, a somber reflection that brings us to the brink of Easter. The color is purple, as Lent continues.

We celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to the believers after the Ascension of Jesus. Jesus has departed from the earth but the Holy Spirit-- the third Person of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)-- is present to be the believers' Advocate. Pentecost is a long season that lasts through the summer and fall. The color for the Day of Pentecost is red, and green for the rest of the season until Advent.
